Schreiner takes us from the merging of Amerindian, African and European cultures under the Portuguese colonists to the evolution of the many rhythms and dance forms associated with popular Brazilian music. The choro, the samba, the bossa nova are coolly and carefully unravelled and the book ends on the contemporary music scene of the 1990s.
